Sugar in our Food
We are now consuming 141 pounds of sugar per year--per person. Our most frequently used sugar in our food is refined: sucrose, dextrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, saccharide, brown sugar, white sugar, and corn syrup.
"The difference between feeling up or down, sane or insane, calm or freaked out, inspired or depressed depends in large measure upon what we put in our mouth." William Dufty, Sugar Blues, pg.46

Sugar is NOT Healthy

A friend recently told me that sugar is good for us based on a study he had read. Who paid for that study? Even a study done by an Ivy League university can be skewed if the funding is coming from sugar interests. McCollum's A History of Nutrition (1957) states, "The author and publishers are indebted to The Nutrition Foundation, Inc., for a grant provided to meet a portion of the cost of publication of this book." The Nutrition Foundation, Inc. is a front organization for leading sugar-pushers : American Sugar Refining Company, Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Curtis Candy Co., General Foods, General Mills, Nestles Co., Inc., Pet Milk Co., and Sunshine Biscuits (about 45 similar companies). Their findings: "Sugar has now become an essential part of the food of the Europeans, ...perhaps a greater proportion of nourishment..." And, it says that sugar's injury to teeth is a "prejudice given up." (Wm. Dufty, Sugar Blues,  p.142) If you saw the movie Thank You for Smoking , you'll recall the star working for The Academy of Tobacco Studies whose sole purpose was to exonerate smoking. Look deep into the source of nutritional information.

Is Sugar Addictive

"Being almost 100% "pure," this high-calorie dynamite bombs the pancreas and pituitary gland into gushing forth a hyper-secretion of hormones compatible in intensity to that artificially produced in laboratory animals with drugs and hormones." Dr. Edward Howell, Enzyme Nutrition (p.84-85)
In the early 1900's sugar was believed to be the greatest of all addictive evils , but the attitude toward opiates was relatively benign. "Heroin was hailed in its turn as the miracle wonder drug of its time. It replaced morphine in the treatment of sugar diabetes." "The difference between sugar addiction and narcotic addiction is largely one of degree." Wm. Dufty, Sugar Blues (p.41,43) Will we ever see past the sugar pushers promotion of sugar to see it for what it really is? Max Planck said change only occurs when an old generation dies and a new one grows up.
 Why We are Fat Today

Brian Moylan
Our bodies need nutrients to keep us healthy. When we don't get these nutrients from our food, our bodies crave the nutrients. Searching for new nutrients, our body tells us we are still hungry.
Dr. Edward Howell tells us it happens like this: When sugar gets in our mouths, "it throws the endocrine switchboard into helter-skelter. The glands know that it has been loaded up with a lot of calories but in spite of searching, the nutrients that normally go along with the calories cannot be found in the body. So in order to take in more food, in the expectation of getting the important vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, (an alert) is issued in the form of increased appetite." (Enzyme Nutrition, p.84-85) There it is!

If No Sugar, Then What?

My grandson was at my house one day and asked me for something sweet. I gave him a date. He keeps asking me if I have any more of that "candy." Dried fruits are a good way to satisfy the sugar monster. Switch your taste buds to fresh fruit as soon as you can with dried fruits as desserts. I have made wonderful dried fruit desserts from Sweet Temptations by Frances Kendall.
Do you love to bake? How do we get sweetness without sugar in our food? When I gave up sugar when my children were young, I used the book Sweet and Sugar Free by Karen E. Barkie. It is a book of dessert recipes that uses natural sweetness from fresh fruit. I substituted nondairy products and egg replacer when vegan.
The pediatrician Dr. Lendon H. Smith, M.D., former radio and television personality and author of Improving Your Child's Behavior Chemistry , had been the leading advocate that sugar causes hyperactivity in children. On page 92 of his book he mentions that because of the debilitating effect of sugar on the body's defenses, some parents saw an absence of the common cold and of many allergies after taking their children off sugar.

Natural Sugar and Fiber

The sugar in our food should be natural. Our body is intended to like fruit naturally. It digests with its own enzymes, does not elevate blood sugar levels in healthy people, should satisfy our sweet tooth, and provides plenty of fiber.
Dr. Robert H. Lustig, M.D. has said that 50,000 years ago we ate 100 to 300 grams of fiber per day. Today, the average person eats 12 grams per day. Fast food restaurants serve fiberless food.

Dr. William Coda Martin stated, "Nature supplies these elements (proteins, vitamins, minerals) in each plant in quantities sufficient to metabolize the carbohydrate in that particular plant. There is no excess for other added carbohydrates.." In other words, the carbohydrates in sugar steal from our body to digest. Let's get back to nature, to good health!
